Deep green retrofits in Alberta

Retrofits of existing buildings can improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, increase a building’s asset value, lower utility costs, optimize occupant comfort, and minimize risk against future market conditions. Deep green retrofits aim to significantly improve a building’s performance through major HVAC system upgrades and replacements as equipment approaches end-of-life. Additional upgrades include lighting, building envelope, and other components, targeting more than 50 per cent energy savings and 30 per cent carbon reductions, up to ‘net zero.’ 

Governments at federal, provincial and municipal levels are actively developing and implementing greenhouse gas reduction targets and regulations, and there are ample opportunities to take advantage of incentive and funding programs for deep retrofits of existing buildings. Some of the drivers promoting deep green retrofits include financial benefits, building modernization, climate resilience, achievement of ‘net zero’ targets, asset value, and aging equipment replacement. 

This session will provide attendees with an understanding of deep green retrofit pressures, opportunities and approaches in Alberta, through multiple case studies across a variety of building types.

About the presenters

Lucas Maidens, P.Eng., CPHC

Lucas Maidens, a professional engineer and a certified passive house consultant, is an associate with Integral Group’s mechanical engineering team. He has worked on a wide variety of buildings including commercial, residential, educational, health care, and municipal projects. Lucas applies a deep green lens to the projects he designs as an engineer, and uses energy modelling to optimize building performance through design analytics.


Eric White is a LEED accredited professional, a WELL accredited professional, and a certified passive house consultant. At Integral Group, his focus on deep green building design and performance has been instrumental in connecting team members to ensure that every project’s sustainability goals are achieved. Eric has been part of integrated design teams for education, healthcare, cultural, civic, commercial and residential projects.
