Working with the GOA on your behalf

ASET is a self-regulating professional association with a long history of representing more than 17,000 members from 21 Canadian-certified technicians and technologist disciplines in Alberta. Our members have met strict national criteria for certification in their field and are accountable for public safety under the law. Yet, we are the only regulatory organization in Alberta without a legislated scope of practice and that needs to change.

A scope of practice defines the procedures, actions, and processes that an individual is permitted to undertake in keeping with the terms of their professional license, based on specific education and experience, and competency.

ASET is working with the Government of Alberta and key stakeholders to win support for modernizing the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act to include an expanded scope of practice for P.Tech.s and an independent scope of practice for C.E.T.s. These changes are long overdue and will protect public safety, improve labour mobility, and will empower employers to hire workers who are the qualified for the job.
