Trish McLevin, C.E.T.

Trish McLevin started her journey as a technologist when she graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) from the hydrogeological engineering program. She spent the next 15 years at Thurber Engineering, Ltd. There, she worked her way up from a tech-in-training to a senior geotechnical lab technologist. 

While at Thurber, Trish paralleled her progression in the workplace with her personal professional development. She moved from a technologist-in-training (T.T.) designation to a certified engineering technologist (C.E.T.) certification. 

An avid learner, Trish soaked up as much information as she could on entering the industry. She travelled around Alberta, doing environmental and geotechnical drilling, remediation and well monitoring, compaction testing and assisting with large concrete pouring jobs.

Even between her field assignments, Trish kept busy with her learning. She swapped out coveralls for a lab coat and learned a full range of lab testing procedures including basic index testing, materials testing and eventually advanced geotechnical testing. It was during these hours spent in the lab that Trish found her calling. 

It wasn’t long before she became the person everyone came to for answers in the lab, and she’d trained new techs to take over for her in the field. After that she became a full-time lab technician. Over the years, she has trained and mentored many techs and engineers, and continues to do so in her new role at Stantec Consulting.  

Trish started at Stantec in 2017 as a senior laboratory technician.  Her work involves lab testing, mentoring new techs, review of lab testing by the techs, calibration and inventory management, lab billing and filing and quality control. She enjoys quality control and mentorship the most out of all her duties. In her additional role of social engagement coordinator, she keeps the team in good spirits and spearheads charity drives.  

Trish has also taken on a quality review position and is working on starting an in-house quality committee to faster implement improvements. Quality control goes beyond the lab and should cover all science and technology disciplines.  Variances in skills and attitude level can be very damaging to projects and trust in general. For these reasons, Trish strives for 100 per cent compliance to ASET’s standards by educating hiring managers on the association’s value.

Trish’s goals as a Councillor are “to increase value for membership and ramp up the mentorship program.” Since receiving certification in 2002, Trish has seen a decrease in certain services. She plans to reverse these changes and get the programs back to where they were when she first became a member. 

“There used to be more retail discounts available when I first came on board,” Trish has noticed. “That seems to have dwindled and at least one of them isn’t honouring the discount. I hear the mentorship program is lacking in mentors volunteering.  I would like to find our why and help to increase the number of both mentors and mentees.”

To accomplish her goal for the association, Trish isn’t afraid to bring about a few growing pains. “At work, I am the squeaky wheel that forces change.  My husband calls it nagging, I call it tenacity,” She laughs.

Trish believes in work-life balance. She enjoys the backcountry and canoeing as well as spending time with her husband, four kids, five grandkids and her three colonies of over 240,000 honeybees.
