As second vice-president, Terry will work to ensure that the right to be called a technologist anywhere within someone’s job/career title is protected and preserved.

When someone is granted a C.E.T. or a P.Tech.(Eng.) designation it gives society a level of confidence that the person has the adequate training and education to make sound engineering decisions. This last statement is paramount, given the job of an engineering society to protect the public interest at all times, Terry emphasizes. He points out that the title of technologist is just as important as that of engineer and should be treated as such.

Terry has over 30 years of experience working in the technology sector in Western Canada. He received his welding engineering technology diploma from SAIT in 1992. Terry is a P.Tech.(Eng.) with ASET, a P.L.(Eng.) with APEGA, and has international welding technologist status with the International Institute of Welding.

After graduating from SAIT, he started from the ground floor as an inspector before gaining further education and experience to become a senior technical specialist with Fluor Canada.

He has worked as senior QC/QA inspection coordinator (welding specialist) at Jacobs Engineering Ltd., senior staff technologist (welding/materials) – lead QC/QA coordinator at Cenovus Energy, and as a senior welding engineering technologist/SME (welding/fabrication) at TC Energy.

Adding to an illustrious career in welding technology, Terry has been involved on multiple committees and boards over the years. These include as:

  • Chairperson for American Welding Society B2A, B2E and B2H sub committees
  • Director at Large for the Alberta Welding Optimization Committee (AWOC)
  • Was Co-chairman for welding at the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association; and
  • Member of ASME Section IX research and development group.

In addition to these duties, Terry has given his time to volunteering with ASET. He spent 10 years as a member of the ASET/APEGA Joint Board of Examiners P.Tech.(Eng.) selection committee. Leveraging these committee and board positions, Terry would take the action needed to push ASET and its goals forward.

Terry is a strong believer in continual professional development. He is bilingual, speaking both English and German fluently.
